Why we named this litter "StandByMe" ?

Well, lets start by the beginning.... The name of the litter is in the memory of "Grandpa Elliott" and to honor his legacy.

"Grandpa Elliott Small" is a well-known New Orleans musician who could regularly be seen in his signature blue overalls, red shirt and floppy hat playing on the streets of the French Quarte. He was born in New Orleans and spent most of his life here. Small picked up the harmonica when he was young, and played and sang in the French Quarter for close to 70 years, holding a regular spot at the corner of Toulouse and Royal streets.

In 2008, Small sang on a rendition of "Stand By Me," which featured street musicians from around the world. The video for the song went viral.

The recording of "Stand By Me" was part of producer Mark Johnson's Playing For Change, a global multimedia project promoting music education. Following "Stand By Me," Small joined the Playing For Change band and toured internationally, including dates with Robert Plant and appeared on "The Tonight Show" and "The Colbert Report." When he returned home, Small also was invited to play the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

More than a decade ago, Small's eyesight began to fail and he became blind. He continued playing on French Quarter streets before the pandemic paused the music.

"People spot me all the way from Canal Street in my red shirt," Small told The Times-Picayune, "and they start shouting, 'There's Grandpa! There's Grandpa!'"

Choosing a Puppy:

When the new puppies are  5-6  weeks of age or older, and only after DNA (if applicable) and Hearing tests are completed, you will be invited to visit our kennel home to meet them and choose the one to be become part of your family.

While we prefer every prospect puppy owner to personally meet the puppies before choosing and making a commitment, in the given case you are unable to visit, we will provide you with as much information as we are able to (weight and size, pictures, videos etc) in order to help you choose.

There is not an specific order to choose the pups. Based on our evaluation of each, we will do our best to give each Puppy Parent as many options as possible, taking into account each person/family's preferences (Color, Gender, Size) and lifestyle.

Once you have chosen your puppy, you are welcome to visit, as many times as you wish, to personally follow up on your little one's development.

At 4 weeks of age, we should be able to identify the pups that are deaf bilaterally. However, unilateral deafness (Only an ear good) can only be determined at the BAER test, which will be scheduled any time between the 6th to 8th weeks of age. In the given case that your chosen puppy happens to be affected and  you decide against keeping it, your deposit shall be refunded immediately.

IMPORTANT:

We, as The Breeders, reserve the right to have the first pick of any litter.

Breeders and Co-breeders may set aside/hold longer one or more puppies for further evaluation to determine potential.

Delivery and Pick Up

Based on our past personal experiences, we do not use outside transportation companies to deliver puppies. All puppies must be picked up in person OR arrangements can be made for us to personally take the puppy to you, for an additional fee, which will include transportation and lodging expenses as applicable. This service is subject to our availability and is ONLY available to the new puppy owners that live out of state.

Journal Entries

*Entries on this section will be added as they become available (with date stamps), from the day the mother is inseminated until the day the puppies leave to their new homes*

05/27/2023 - First breeding

06/23/2023 - Pregnancy confirmed by ultrasoud.

07/28/2023 - Phoebe started showing the first signs of labor early am. The first puppy was born at 11am, and the last one at 3:30 am (next day). All puppies seem to be in good health and nursing already.

07/29/2023 - Phoebe is being a great mom, although, she is not producing enough milk/colostrum to keep her babies satisfied, so we will be tube-feeding every few hours and keeping tracking of their weights more often than usual to make sure they are developing ok.

7/31/2023 - Dewclaws have been removed. All puppies continue to gain weight consistently.

08/04/2023 - Puppies are 1 week of weight today. Weights have been recorded, Most have doubled their birth weight.

08/08/2023 - DNA test result received. 5 out of 11 puppies are LUA. Shoutout sent to puppy owners by email. See DNA reports bellow.

08/11/2023 - Puppies are 2 weeks of age. Nails were trimmed, weights recorded and they had their first dosage of dewormer.

They are opening their eyes and starting to take their first steps. All puppies continue to grow and develop satisfactory.

08/16/2023 – Hearing Test and Final Vet appointment have been scheduled.

08/21/2023 – Yellow-multi collar is deaf (Bilaterally). Deaf dogs are as smart as any hearing dog, however, they do require different kind of training and approach. It is easy for us to determine fully deaf puppies as they don’t respond to noises. However, unilateral deafness can only be determined at the BAER test.

Both litters are now out of the whelping boxes and roaming free in the play pen. In the play pen, they have a doggie door leading to the turf enclosure. They should soon learn to go outside to potty.

Multi -Color Collar has one blue eye.

08/25/2023 - Shoutout sent via email to all new puppy owners.

09/19/2023 - Hearing Test done. As we knew already, we have one puppy completely deaf, Yellow-Multi, and we found out Black/White is unilateral, meaning that only one ear is good. Report bellow.
