Hearing test has been scheduled and confirmed for April 27th. 03/10/2023 - Puppies gained another ounce in weight. 03/11/2023 - Dewclaws has been removed and sent to the lab for DNA testing to identify the carriers of LUA gene. However, unilateral deafness can only be determined at the hearing test (BAER) after they are 6 weeks of age. 03/31/2023 - The puppies had their first meal- a blend of goat milk powder, puppy kibble and pumpkin. They enjoyed it. Pandora will continue to nurse them and we will complement with the puppy mush twice a day. 04/05/2023 - 4 weeks of age. They passed the physical and fecal tests with flying colors. 04/06/2023 - Puppies now have free range in the playpen with access to the outside. Soon, they will learn to use the doggy door and go outside for potty. 04/19/2023 - Puppies are 6 weeks today. They were dewormed one more time, microchipped and weights recorded. They are actively using the doggy door to go outside for potty with just a few accidents inside. They are now eating the Dry kibble with probiotic and omega 3 supplement added. *** Since our preffered puppy food has been out of stock, we have switch to 4Health for puppy . All puppies will go home with a small bag of food to be used for weaning or continuation. 04/22/2023 - Sadly, Pandora did a mastitis. Vet put her on very strong antibiotics. Well, lets start by the beginning.... The name of the litter is in the memory of "Grandpa Elliott" and to honor his legacy. "Grandpa Elliott Small" is a well-known New Orleans musician who could regularly be seen in his signature blue overalls, red shirt and floppy hat playing on the streets of the French Quarte. He was born in New Orleans and spent most of his life here. Small picked up the harmonica when he was young, and played and sang in the French Quarter for close to 70 years, holding a regular spot at the corner of Toulouse and Royal streets. In 2008, Small sang on a rendition of "Stand By Me," which featured street musicians from around the world. The video for the song went viral. The recording of "Stand By Me" was part of producer Mark Johnson's Playing For Change, a global multimedia project promoting music education. Following "Stand By Me," Small joined the Playing For Change band and toured internationally, including dates with Robert Plant and appeared on "The Tonight Show" and "The Colbert Report." When he returned home, Small also was invited to play the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. More than a decade ago, Small's eyesight began to fail and he became blind. He continued playing on French Quarter streets before the pandemic paused the music. Deaf dogs are as smart as any hearing dog, however, they do require different kind of training and approach. It is easy for us to determine fully deaf puppies as they don’t respond to noises. However, unilateral deafness can only be determined at the BAER test. Both litters are now out of the whelping boxes and roaming free in the play pen. In the play pen, they have a doggie door leading to the turf enclosure. They should soon learn to go outside to potty. Dewclaws Anytime you talk about removing something from a dog’s body, there is a debate about it. When it comes to dewclaws, however, most owners do not know much about them. Often removed by the breeder, they are gone before you take the puppy home, meaning you never really give them a second thought. If you have dealt with them, your experiences may factor into how you feel about them. Some people swear their dog’s need them, others think of them as a nuisance. What Are Dewclaws? Simply put, dewclaws are small “toes” with a nail that are slightly up the leg, above their paw. Some dogs have front dewclaws, some have rear dewclaws, and some have both. Dewclaws are removed for safety reasons, cosmetic reasons, or both. They may be removed because of the risk they will get caught and torn or even ripped off, a painful, messy, and bloody business. An injured dewclaw in an adult dog might need to be removed surgically in a more complicated procedure than dewclaw removal on pups. Dewclaws are generally removed when pups are about 2-3 days old. The little "thumbs" are attached only by cartilage at that age and can easy be snipped off, with a single stitch (or not) to prevent bleeding. Most of them don't bleed at all, and although the pups object vocally (probably to the restraint as much as the snipping) they quickly go back to sleep. Dewclaw removal may create a "cleaner" look to the leg in the show ring, especially if the dewclaws would have stuck out or been loose and floppy. Most Dalmatian dewclaws are small and tight and barely noticeable. ​
